Big Bob and Best Bands of 2006
I’d like to take a moment to talk about the passing
of Bob Brechbill. I first found out from a posting on the
Message Board from Sayten. At first I was in disbelief because
I was just with him the Thursday before at Gullifty’s
and he appeared to be fine. In fact it still seems odd that
the next time I walk in to a big show at Dragonfly, Bob will
not be behind the board. I guess what really bothers me is
the age thing, both Bob and myself are 41. One of the conversations
we had at Gullifty’s was the toll our bodies have taken
over the years of neglect. I grew up in the 80’s, the
decade of abuse, and can only imagine what those years have
done to my body. Add that to the years of Jager consumption
that could probably fill one of the Great Lakes, and I’m
pretty sure my insides are an accident waiting to happen.
I’ve made half ass attempts over the last few months
to get back in shape, however this seems to be a wake up call
for me.
I’m pleased to hear that Bob’s company Dynamax
will continue to operate. I emailed one of the sound techs
and he mentioned they will try to pull everything together
and keep going. I hope it works out. Bob worked so hard to
build that company. Many times during the Twisted Tuesday
events he would be outside the Dragonfly loading up equipment
for a gig.
We have a very small local music community here in Central
PA. There are only a handful or two of people like Bob, a
person that has worked with numerous bands over the years.
Like most of these people, Bob was one that would do what
he could to help out anyone that would ask. From the postings
on our tribute page and the messages left on My Space, I don’t
think there is any doubt of the respect and admiration Bob
has earned through his labor of love with the local music
industry.
Finally, I’ve gotten a lot of emails over the weekend
from people asking if we would do a tribute concert for Bob.
It’s a great idea, however in my opinion, it’s
not my call. If asked by the family, to do a show, of course
we would and it would be an awesome event. My thoughts on
this are based upon respect for Bob’s family. At this
time that is the only thing that should matter.
On Dec. 27th, Bob’s body will be laid to rest. However
his spirit and passion for local music will be left behind
with each one of us that had the pleasure of working with
and knowing Bob. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Bob’s
family. Big Bob was great guy that will be deeply missed.
Well the time has come for my Top 10 bands of 2006.
I would like to mention that since we held the Central PA
Music Awards the following bands are my personal favorites.
Many of you value my opinions and the following are my “must
see” bands.
1. Hierosonic – Who am I to go against
the band voted “Best Original Band” by our site
visitors. I really hope good things will happen with Hiero
in 2007. Much is going on with the band and I must keep my
lips sealed. What I like best about this band is the fact
success has not gotten their heads bigger. They are still
the same bunch of great guys I met years ago and work hard
at everything they do. Unlike others that act like their shit
doesn’t stink, just as they think they are going places.
(Of course they never do and the wheel just keeps spinning).
My only complaint with Hiero was their lack of local shows
in 2006. Of course there was a member change and I’ve
been assured 2007 will see more Hierosonic shows in Central
PA.
2. Condition K – Up two spots from
last year. CK also went through some member changes in 2006.
They brought in a big fish with Jeremy Hummel, formerly of
Breaking Benjamin, behind the drum kit. The boy can pound
the skins and can also provide the insight needed to take
Condition K to the next level. The band is currently in the
studio recording some new stuff. I’ve heard it during
a Twisted Tuesday event this summer and the shit rocks!!!
I look for good things from the band in 2007.
3. Holis – I had Holis as a band
to watch in 2006. Watch I did and I’m impressed with
what they have done. Holis had a huge CD Release Party and
are building a nice size fan base with each show. Their music
is catchy and can be enjoyed no matter what your taste. Voted
Best Rock/Pop Band for a reason. Congrats to Ray and the guys!!!
Keep up the great job!!!!
4. The Gorgonites – Against all odds
The Gorgonites invaded Central PA with their own unique style.
Another band I had listed on the watch in 2006 list. These
guys have balls and although most venues won’t give
them the time of day, I’ll stand behind this dynamic
duo. The Gorgonites aren’t for everyone, but if you
like to see a band that has some of the best fans, you need
to see The Gorgonites.
5. Lotus Blue – I like Lotus Blue
for 2 reasons. One, they are a great bunch of guys that are
promotional whores. Two, their music can be enjoyed by all.
I look forward to their CD Release in 2007. Lotus Blue has
nothing but themselves holding them back in 07’.
6. Emily’s ToyBox – OK stop
with the boo’s. I had the pleasure of seeing ETB do
an all original show at the Toys for Tots benefit a few weeks
ago. I’m telling you no one is a master of the crowd,
better than lead vocals, Mike Wise. The guy is a total nut
job and by the end of their set, you will have fallen under
the ETB spell. ETB is one of the first bands I featured on
the website over 7 years ago and just like the Energizer Bunny
they keep going and going and going.
7. Julian Fist – The blazing guitars
are back again!!! These guys have the experience to do what
it takes, and I’m looking forward to bigger and better
things from JF in 2007. They should have a CD dropping later
in the year.
8. Spinebelt – Grab your nuts and
raise the horns because Spinebelt has returned!!! I’ll
give Spinebelt my Metal Band nod. They rock with their cocks
out and will also have a CD dropping in 2007.
9. The Jellybricks – Another band
that has been around a long time. I had the pleasure of having
The Jellybricks play a few Twisted Tuesday events over the
summer and every show I had people come up to me and say “those
guys are good”. If you haven’t seen The Jellybricks
lately, you’re missing out on a great band.
10. Fink’s Constant – I’ll
go out on a limb for these guys. Fink’s has a sound
unknown for many in Central PA. After a few songs most females
are movin’ their ass to the music pouring out from the
stage. I really wish FC would hook up with more bands to expose
themselves to the masses. They have a non-threatening sound
that can be enjoyed by all. Also, their live recorded CD is
a masterpiece!!!
Well there you have it my personal Top 10 Bands of 2006 list.
I should mention that this is just a list. I’ve had
the pleasure of working with many great bands this year and
just because they didn’t make the list doesn’t
mean they suck.
Bands to watch in 2007:
Slow Andy – This band fills the punk
rock void of Central PA. After some time off and member changes,
Slow Andy is back and taking no prisoners. This is a band
I’ll be backing in 2007, so keep an eye out for more
Harrisburg area shows and be sure to check them out.
Betty’s Bones – I saw them at
Gullifty’s and was very impressed with their music.
Here’s my only problem, will they still be around at
the end of 2007. I’ve seen so many bands over the years
start out with great buzz and then POOF their gone. I guess
time will tell.
The Masquerades – I’m looking
for big things from this band in 2007. Currently it seems
these guys are stuck in the mud. However once the decide it’s
time to get moving, I’m sure they will spring onto the
scene with force.
Adrian Blitzer – Hopefully they find
a guitarist and start working on new original music. Sure
covers pay the bills but these guys can also lay down the
originals that aren’t to heavy, instead just border
the edge. I know they read my stuff and I hope to see more
new originals coming from the guys in 2007.
Cover bands:
I like all types of music and cover bands are included. If
you want to check out a cover band here’s my choices.
Something Fluid – I’ve known
these guys and girl for years and only Gretchen and Chris
remain. What I like about Something Fluid is their ability
to bring the crowd into their set. With shared vocals they
can go from pop to metal as quick as a chord change. Be sure
to check these guys out and don’t be surprised if you’re
in the front row and get a mic in your face to help out with
a song.
Amy K Band – I’ve mentioned
before that when I first saw Amy with Love Stomp I thought
she was horrible. Guess my surprise when I heard people telling
me to check out her new band. I must admit I was pleasantly
surprised with the new band. They play a broad range of songs
that keep the crowd moving. Like people told me, now I’m
telling you, go see the Amy K Band for yourself.
Wiskerbisket – Why this band is not
in the Hardware Bar rotation is beyond me. Every time I see
this band I’m more impressed. Now they have Millhouse
slapping the bass strings. The ‘bisket is a must see
cover band. Congrats to Big H for staying on course and putting
together a great band.
Well that’s all for my last article of 2006. Before
I go I’d like to say thanks to all the site staffers
for their efforts in 2006. Special thanks to Single Girl for
helping me pull off the best music event of 2006. (Central
PA Music Awards Ceremony) Thanks to all the bands that played
our shows this year. Thank you to all the fans that came out
in support of our shows. Lastly a very BIG THANK YOU to my
girlfriend for putting up with another year of my shit. I’m
very fortunate to have someone that understands my passion
for local music and allows me (most of the time) to pursue
my passion.
Thanks once again to everyone for making 2006 a great year
for HBGOnline.
We look forward to some kick ass stuff for 2007. STAY TUNED!!!
