Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the May 6 edition of Rocky 104.9 and Rocky 99's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WRKY-FM (http://www.rocky1049.com) and WRKW-FM (http://www.rocky99.com).

Thanks to our guest this week, Dan Klock of Mysterytrain, spotlighting his solo acoustic endeavor, Raggedy Hobo! Dan told us the story behind Raggedy Hobo and explained why he resurrected the project after shelving it for several years. We heard some live Raggedy Hobo footage, as well as two new live Mysterytrain tunes! Along the way, we updated “Local Music News,” dug a 1999 song by Johnstown native Beth Staley from the archive for a “Local Music Flashback,” and reviewed Emmett and Mary’s S/T CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner.”

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

RICH EDMUNDSON – “Percussive Guitar” (performed on the air 4/11/10)
MAMA CORN – “Goin’ up the Mountain”
RAGGEDY HOBO – “Stealin’” (live)
THE GOOD SEEDS – “Suck Up”
RAGGEDY HOBO – “Goin’ Down the Road Feeling Bad” (live)
HOGMAW – “I’m Gone” (live)
RAGGEDY HOBO – “Sitting Here in Limbo” (live)

HOUR TWO:

TARRA LAYNE – “Beautiful Day”
MYSTERYTRAIN – “Sway” (performed live 3/23/12 at Pellegrine’s)
EMMETT AND MARY – “The Book of Idols”
RAGGEDY HOBO – “Ripple” (live)
BETH STALEY – “Paper Mache Crowd” (1999, Local Music Flashback)
MYSTERYTRAIN – “Step It Up” (performed live 3/23/12 at Pellegrine’s)

On our next show, back by popular demand, we present another edition of the “Cover Song Special!” We’ll explore how area bands and artists interpret the music of other artists; we’ll hear local takes on time-tested classics, as well as obscure back-of-the-rack gems and even covers of other local bands! We will also update “Local Music News,” and dig into the archive for a “Local Music Flashback” cover song! We’ll cover local covers on the “Homegrown Rocker Cover Song Special,” next Sunday night!

Upcoming guests and specials include:

MAY 20 – RICH EDMUNDSON
MAY 27 – MEMORIAL DAY SPECIAL
JUNE 3 – JEFF PITTINGER
JUNE 10 – RON GALLUCCI
JUNE 17 – FATHER’S DAY SPECIAL
JUNE 24 – SETH CONNER
JULY 8 – THE WHATLEYS

In Local Music News…

Area youth were given the chance to shine last Sunday, April 29, during Dennie Huber’s 22nd annual Crazy Fest Amateur Youth Talent Show, held at the Greenwood Firehall in Altoona. This was one of the larger and most attended Crazy Fest events in recent years; youngsters ages 21 and younger were given the opportunities to display their talents in front of a large, friendly and supportive crowd, while competing for a large number of trophies and awards. At the end of the day, the awards were handed out, and here are the winners: In the ages 8-9 category, Launa Henry of Hollidaysburg’s singing performance of Nancy Sinatra’s “These Boots” won the judges and the audience, and captured first place. In the age 10 group, Cianna Stone of Hollidaysburg’s dance performance won first place. In the age 11 division, Altoona’s Skyland Brown earned the top prize for her singing performance. Another Altoona singer, Kenna Dunio, captured first place in the age 12 category with her singing performance of Christina Aguilera’s “We Are Beautiful.” In age 13, Elizabeth Vaughn of Altoona won top honors with her dancing performance. For the age 14 group, Danny Mehok of Reynoldsville won first place with his entertaining magic performance. In the 16-year-old division, Meghan Sinisi of Altoona won first place with her baton-twirling display. In the age 17 group, Chelsea Moses of Hollidaysburg won top honors with her singing performance. In the Crazy Fest duos and groups category, Chelsea and Stevie Moses won first prize for their rendition of Alanis Morisette’s “Hand in My Pocket.” And Altoona-based Christian rock band Refuge won the Crazy Fest band division first prize. In other awards during Crazy Fest, the “Future Star” honors, determined by the judges, went to Kenna Dunio in the age 13 and under group, and to Chelsea Moses in the age 14 and older group. The “Outstanding Musician – Female” award went to Kelsey Houck, bass player for Altoona-based Christian rap group Let There Be Light; and the “Outstanding Musician – Male” award went to Refuge keyboard player Sam Laluripia. “Outstanding Dancer” awards went to Elizabeth Vaughn in the junior class, and to Xena Price in the senior class. Winning Crazy Fest “Outstanding Vocalist” awards were Shannon Barnes of Hollidaysburg in the female class, and D-Jay Dunio of Altoona in the male class. The “Outstanding Variety Act” award went to M&M Magic of Reynoldsville; and the “Outstanding Twirler” awards went to Emily Lozinski in the junior division, and to Meghan Sinisi in the senior division. “Fan Favorite” awards, determined by audience votes, went to Justin McCalpin in the boys’ division, and Launa Henry in the girls’ division. Dennie Huber also presented some honorary trophies during Crazy Fest, entering Annette Nagle, Kira Burley and Elaini into the Crazy Fest Hall Of Fame, and presenting the band E.V.K. with the first ever Crazy Fest Outstanding Community Service Award. Dennie Huber thanks all of the contestants, the audience members, the volunteers, the sponsors, Jack Servello on sound, and the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Company for the success of this year’s Crazy Fest.
